Epigenetics?????

It's Monday so that means back to the grind.  Today I was speaking with a friend about the characteristics that our children have that we see in ourselves.  We talked about how our children do certain things when they seemed stressed or anxious or how we used to behave as children in response to certain things.  This reminded me of a term I had heard a while ago and has been gaining a lot of interest in the world.  It's called epigenetics.  But what exactly is that?  Epigenetics is the experiences that occur during fetal and or infant development can lead to changes in brain architecture and function.  These changes may lead to developmental pathways that can alter or compromise future health and well being.  And in turn this is then passed on to the NEXT generation.  Studies have actually shown this through looking at gene expression.  So all those things you often hear about like stress during pregnancy or stress after making it hard for parents to bond with baby do matter.  This delicate time when baby's brain is continuing to grow means there is a window of opportunity, which good or bad, can have long term effects.  So knowing this how can we nurture our babies delicate brains in the most optimal way? Stay tuned......
